Featured Pet: Tigger

Tigger is a tugger of the heart strings. He is a 10 year old neutered male who lost his home when his senior person could no longer care for him. While initially cautious meeting new people, once he sniffs out a friendly hand he is right there begging for love and conversation. He appears to be in very good health so should have many more good years in him. Since Tigger is used to being the only pet in the home that might be the best situation for him, although it is not mandatory. To meet this gorgeous orange tabby, contact the shelter and ask about Tigger, ID#A037417.

Featured Pet: Percy

Percy is a 2 year old neutered chocolate Labrador Retriever male. He loves affection and attention and will do best in a family that can spend time with him and appreciate his active lifestyle. Taking a long walk or going to the dog park is on Percy’s daily calendar. Because of some previous neglect, he currently has a skin condition due to flea allergies. He is as sweet as the word chocolate implies, so don’t let his weathered coat discourage you from giving Percy a look. He should be good with dogs and kids, but a meet and greet with the whole family, including other dogs, should always precede an adoption. To meet Percy, contact the shelter and inquire about ID#A037542.

Zarina

Zarina is a loving and affectionate kitten who enjoys being held and is a world champion purr machine. Sadly, Zarina was declawed by previous owners so she will need to find an indoor only forever home. Zarina likes other cats (as long as they are not aggressive) but is frightened by dogs. Zarina would be open to sharing her new home with older children. To find out more about Zarina contact Virginia at virginia.duffy@acmartin.com.

Featured Pet: Andre

Andre is a 3 year old gray and white male Pit Bull Terrier.  He is a very active dog who absolutely loves to play ball.  Daily walks, energetic play and exercise are a must for this boy.  Currently Andre is participating in the VBAS Happy Tails program with Trainer Lydia Perez. He is learning basic commands and appropriate behavior.  If you are an active family and are willing to continue this training process,  Andre should be an amazing pet for you.  An adult only household will be best for Andre and  as always, If you have other dogs, please be sure to arrange a meet and greet prior to adoption.  To meet the lovable Andre, contact the shelter and inquire about ID#A036718.

February Volunteer of the Month

‘Going the Distance’ is a boxing expression referring to boxing matches where an opponent tries to win by points rather than by a knockout.  As a Volunteer of the VBAS, Alexis Cole succeeded with plenty of “knockout” initiatives, including the Parker System, Sponsor a Kitten, Train a Dog, the charitable catalog and the VBAS email campaigns.  Under her watch as President, Happy Tails was created, The VBAS website was completely revamped, with Alexis co-writing a grant proposal that has paid for the site in current and future operations, and the VBAS Facebook page secured over 1000 fans.  And all of these “knockouts” are just a part of Alexis’s history with the VBAS because the rest of the story is really about her extraordinary ability to go the distance–to not only win, but to ensure that she did, and continues to do, everything in her power to keep the people of our organization strong, vital and thriving.

A few years ago, when a friend asked why she wouldn’t consider volunteering at a different animal shelter or rescue, one that is perhaps closer to where she resides in Redondo Beach, Alexis responded that she wouldn’t want to volunteer anywhere else because she “had found her people.”  Her statement confirms her loyalty to all of us, but it’s also an actual fact.  One of Alexis’s many talents is finding people. Many volunteers at the VBAS are here specifically because of Alexis and many of our leaders were recruited by her, as she has convinced talented volunteers to become more involved.  Among Alexis’s many recruits is Alaina Kovel, who Alexis recruited to be a trainer and then later became the Director for the Parker System. Today Alaina is the Vice President of the VBAS. Alexis also convinced Denise Fleck to commit to handling publicity for the VBAS for a six month period and now Denise serves as our President.

While she has helped organize her fair share of fundraising events, today she is collaborating on yet another. Alexis is helping to organize the VBAS fundraiser “Laugh Your Tail Off” after using her straightforward, yet careful approach to negotiate a great contract with Flappers, the event venue.  She aided in the promotion of this fundraiser and in securing the raffle/auction prizes in addition to keeping up with her managerial duties for the new VBAS website.

Alexis is tireless. She has fought long and hard. Countless of her opponents have tired, but Alexis continues to fight with passion, professionalism and a sense of urgency on behalf the animals and the people of the VBAS. And like every great fighter, she has had to suffer the jeers as well as the cheers. Like all leaders, she has had to make choices that were difficult and even, at times, unpopular.  No matter how the match ends, let the record show how Alexis Cole traveled across town to stand by her people, how her ideas and initiatives help to raise thousands and thousands of dollars, how her efforts helped make it possible to enjoy our new website, how her stamina ensured our growth, how her recruits became amazing leaders themselves poised to face the challenges ahead, how Alexis worked on behalf of the animals, never showing fatigue , continuing to give her best, forever going the distance.

Featured Pet: Lizzie

Lizzie is a six year old spayed female cat with all the colors of Autumn in her beautiful longhair. When she first arrived at the shelter Lizzie would hide her face in a corner. Today, she is facing forward and checking out every person who stops to admire her. Lizzie loves head rubs and treats and is no longer that shy girl. The hidden treasure of the shelter, Lizzie ID# A037039, is waiting to meet her future family.

Featured Pet: Regan

Regan is an eleven month old tortoiseshell kitten with a stunning appearance. She is a playful, confident cat. Regan will enjoy the company of another cat and seems to connect more with adults rather than children. All combinations of pet/people families are acceptable to her however as she is mostly interested in a forever home. Noisy crowds or bustling places are not her favorites. To meet this ‘Acatemy’ Award nominee, contact her foster parent Brittany, 760-885-4945.

Featured Pet: Gasolina

Gasolina is a spayed brown and black female Dachshund mix. This little girl is a sweet, loving and patient dog.  Gasolina gets along well with all kinds of dogs and should be a good match for a family with older children. At eight years old she will qualify for the ‘Seniors for Seniors’ program and would be FANTASTIC for a senior looking for a companion. The Seniors for Seniors program allows any Burbank resident 55 or older to adopt a senior pet for a reduced fee.  Please note: proof of age and Burbank residency is required at the time of adoption. Gasolina will happily adjust to either an apartment or a house and brings along a wealth of affection for her new family. To meet Gasolina, contact the shelter and inquire about ID#A011035.
