Esme’s Story

Esme the kitten arrived at the shelter in terrible condition.  She was emaciated, weighed only four ounces, and covered head to toe in filth.  She looked more like a chick that had been hatched from an egg than a kitten.

Medical immediately went to work to get her stabilized. She looked better after getting meds and a bath, but she was also half bald!  Now instead of a hatched chick, she looked more like a plucked chicken.  We gave her the nickname “Chicken Kitten”.

But she wasn’t out of the woods yet.  She needed round the clock TLC, and was placed in a foster home.  We all held our breath and kept our fingers crossed.

Happily, Chicken Kitten (now named Esme) was a fighter.  She hung in there and started putting on weight.  As she got stronger, she started to play with her foster mom and explore her new surroundings.  After a few weeks our little chicken turned into an actual kitten!

And as her fur grew back, she surprised us with her gorgeous stripes!

7 weeks later (it went so fast!), little Esme had transformed into a happy 2 pound kitten and was adopted to her forever home!

The Kitten Foster Program would like to say a big thank you to Shelter Medical and Foster Mom Sheila for giving Esme the special care she needed.  Thank you for giving her a second chance!

Esme is one of the 350+ kittens our Kitten Foster Program will save in 2025.  But we need your help.  So many kittens are coming in,  and we need more foster homes to house them.  Please consider fostering kittens.  The program provides training and all supplies, and you get kittens to play with for a few weeks!   Please sign up to foster and help save a life.

And if you are unable to foster, please consider donating to help support the program.   Thank you!
