The Twelve Days of VBAS!

On the 1st day of Christmas, the VBAS Medical Program gave to Lottie ONE hernia surgery!

Lottie is a sweet little pup who arrived at the shelter with a massive hernia. We sent her to a specialist who surgically repaired it. After she recovered, Lottie was up and running about, and she was quickly adopted.

When animals need special surgeries or procedures that are beyond the capabilities of the shelter, The Volunteers of the Burbank Animal Shelter step in to fund them. This year was an incredible challenge as we funded more than 20 special surgeries at outside hospitals. (That’s more than we’ve done in the previous 3 years combined!)

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, Lottie, Moana, Harold, Choo Choo, Bug, Skipper, Mochaccino, Harlow, Willow, Bones, Milo, Sammy, Stella, Petunia, Ebenezer, Pirate, Odin, Rex, Fergie, Lobo, Sampson and others got a second chance.

Help the next animal at the Shelter that needs to go to the hospital for a life-changing surgery. Donate here: https://thevbas.org/donate/general-donations/

On the 2nd day of Christmas, the VBAS honored TWO dogs, Mike and Ike, by sponsoring a 50% adoption fee reduction for all bonded pairs.

Mike and Ike were able to be adopted together due to the VBAS funding its reduced fee adoption program. In addition to bonded pairs, adoption fees for seniors (7+ years old) and long-term residents (5+ months) are 50% off as well!

Help us continue this program and honor a special love like bonded pairs Mike & Ike, Honey & Racer, and James & Sven, long term resident dogs like Zephyr, Libby, Ruby, Sally Jo and Zeus, and seniors like Tyson the dog, Brittney the cat, and many others. On the 3rd day of Christmas the VBAS Happy Tails Program took our dogs for a THREE mile hike!

An amazing idea for a shelter dog – to hike in a park or on a mountain trail. Twice each month, our Happy Tails Program takes shelter dogs on Volunteer led hikes in Stough Canyon and local parks.

On the 4th day of Christmas the VBAS Kitten Charm School gave each ‘student’ FOUR weeks of classes.

The socialization window for scared and nervous kittens is small, so we started Kitten Charm School to teach these small but fierce kittens that humans are ok! Kitten Charm School provides foster parents with the training, resources and support to work with these scardey-kittens and turn them into loving balls of fluff. More than 66 kittens went to Charm School in 2023 and all of them graduated and went to loving homes.

On the 5th day of Christmas the VBAS sent FIVE puppies to foster homes.

Five puppies were surrendered in February, and our Puppy Foster Program swung into action to find foster homes for them. Overall the Puppy Foster Program placed 27 puppies, and our Adult Dog Foster Program placed 45 dogs in foster homes in 2024.

On the 6th day of Christmas, the VBAS placed SIX barn cats into safe homes during the months of July and August.

Our Barn Cat Program works all year long to secure barns, stables or businesses for outdoor, unsocialized cats who could never be adopted as a house pet. 18 barn cats were placed in working homes in 2024.

On the 7th day of Christmas, our VBAS foster families provided SEVEN days a week of at-home care.

Being a foster parent is a 24/7 job. Whether it be tiny puppies and kittens, a senior dog, or an adult cat needing extra TLC, our foster families gave them all 7 days a week of love and care, and it made all the difference!

On the 8th day of Christmas, The VBAS bought over EIGHT hundred cases of food for our foster kittens!

The 420+ kittens in our Kitten Foster Program ate over 800 cases of kitten food this year!

On the 9th day of Christmas the VBAS gave to our Kitten Foster Program NINE thousand pounds of litter!

Maximus is just as shocked! He and his friends in the Kitten Foster Program (Over 420 kittens fostered this year!) go through tons of litter every year. Literally!

On the 10th day of Christmas, the VBAS provided TEN lab tests per week.

Blankie was not feeling well when he first got to the shelter. Lab tests and bloodwork done by our medical program identified the problem. A treatment plan was made and soon Blankie was feeling much better!

Help us provide labs and bloodwork for all the animals that need it! Donate here: https://thevbas.org/donate/general-donations/

On the 11th day of Christmas, the VBAS gave to injured or ill animals ELEVEN X-rays every week.

Our Digital X-Ray machine continues to be an absolute game changer for our medical program! Every animal needing x-rays gets them!

Help keep our X-ray running and providing life saving diagnosis to more cats and dogs. Donate here: https://thevbas.org/donate/general-donations/

On the 12th day of Christmas the VBAS gave TWELVE months of saving the lives of curious cats, friendly dogs, snuggly bunnies and other furry and feathered creatures.
